[Week 6] 23022016_About the project.

Project: Escape from Toilet

✑ Concept
We want others to aware of the stereotyped of gender they have, which they may not notice. Since toilet is a private place for dividing the gender, we use male and female toilets on the 6/F for composing the installations in order to emphasize the wrong "gender differences" people usually have.

Sometimes, people should treat people with other genders equally and not to discriminate others because of their stubborn mind.

▼ Sanitary napkins on the male urinals represents the male who wants to become girls and they are laughed because of the female actions, like bring sanitary napkins.

▼ We have misconception on the colors for different genders, which will cause people to enter the wrong toilet.

Imitating the boy toilet in female toilet, like peeing on the wrong position and having a boy's underwear on the wire.

[Week 5] 16022016_About the development of the installation project.

✑ Today is my birthday so HAPPY BIRTHDAY first!

✑ (Draft) Concept of our project

The work of Dieter Roth/ Björn Roth inspires me a lot. The artist uses the whole exhibition area as the artwork of his studio. He made good use of the space and let people immerge into the installation.

We want to do the same thing as him -- using the whole space of the male and female toilets to make the arts.

People always have stereotype about the gender or clarify their gender with a clear line. Some people may even bully counterparts with other gender, like intersex. However, when we are young, we do not have that concept and can stay with everyone happily without knowing their gender.

Therefore, we exchange the properties of the female and male toilets. For examples, changing the girl toilet sign into blue color, boy toilet sign into pink, playing gossip TV programe in male toilet and sport competition in female toilet.

We want people to think about why the favorite color of boys cannot be pink or why girls are called rude when they love watching sports. We want the public to have a deeper reflection on the gender after walking into our installation.

[Week 4] 02022016_About compositing objects.

✑ In-class exercise: Create a composite object

Using the objects that you have brought in class, create a composite object and give it a title.

Expired Erhu

Using everyday objects, such as the clips for closing the bread package (the yellow one on the top), glasses box, memo and lipstick, I imitated the shape of Chinese instrument Erhu.

I borrowed incense from my classmate and used it as the bow of Erhu.
I used wires to make the bow originally. However, it is too small and does not stand out. Incense is larger in size so it will be emphasized when it is put near the imitated Erhu (like the photo shown).

As I learnt form the last lesson, isolation of the object's normal use can form a stunning effect. The incense cannot lit up anymore and lose its original function. I do think this combination funny!

✑ Reflection on the lesson:

Though this kind of exercise makes me feel frustrated sometimes. However, I like the process of thinking other uses of an object and the creepy result it comes out finally. It is a good way to practice my imagination and I may get some inspiration for the future artworks.
