[Week 3] 26012016_About surrealism.

✑ In-class work: Clay and object exercise

For The King of Greed

Taking the everyday objects -- one dollar coin and a golden ring as the materials for this exercise.

I tried to think about the similarity and differences between these two object in order to combine them together by clay. The ring is in golden and shiny, which makes me associate to the gold and expensive things. Expensive things make me link to money so I used the dollar coin to symbolize money and price.

Finally, I came up with the idea of a golden money ring which is for the people who love money a lot. Using the dollar coin as the upper surface, it is linked with the golden ring by using clay in rose shape. Rose is beautiful but has sticky thorns, which means the danger behind the beauty. Therefore, I want to convey a message that though the money ring (representing wealth) looks attractive and many people want it, it can be very dangerous when people wear it as some thorns (bad influences) are made on the ring. People need to sacrifice something to achieve the wealth. Sometimes, it can make people more greed and lose their mind.

Though it is a bit pity that I forgot to bring more objects for the lesson, this is a good chance to think out of the box and create things with a limitation. Sometimes, the limitation may lead to an unexpected idea too!

▼ A page comes from the tutorial note:

Q: Come up with a list of adjectives to describe the lines formed by the stickers.

A: irregular, random, transitional, black, dark, deep, bold, many, uneven, clean, colored, thin, overlapped, emotional, accumulative, vertical, curvy, restricted, bound, infinitive

Reflection on the lesson:

I really find the idea of isolating an object from its normal way really fascinating. The artworks shown shocked me and I like how we should think and find the actual meaning in a different way. I will try to make arts with surrealistic style next time and do more weird works to inspire others.

[Week 2] 19012016_About the formation comes from the deepest part of myself.

✑ Scanned in-class work

Your Nose

When I closed my eyes to shape the clay. I tried to feel the texture and make surface become uneven.
After finishing it and opening my eyes, I found a nose on the table!

Echo Tunnel

The music played in class is in a strong beats and sounds like an endless and long tunnel because of the echo sounds.
Therefore, I made the clay into a rectangle and some strings passes across the hole.
Some holes were poked to make an uneven surface for representing the random melody of the song.

My Brain

The object above is the clay I made to represent myself.
Due to the similar shape and my favor on eating apples,
I use a half of the apple surface as the cranium. It is stuffed with piles of strings to symbolize my mind. I want to show the messy and a high quantity of thought(strings) I have in my brain in order to let others know I am a person who thinks a lot and like eating fruits.

However, my classmates told me that the strings were placed well and thought I was I person with clear and well-organized mind, which is totally different from what I expected! Therefore, I do think there are too many rooms for improvement. For instance, the presentation of the strings is not appropriate. Moreover, I should think deeper about myself and should not use apple as one of the elements as it is too direct and not significant enough.

After this lesson, I realized the most important and difficult thing is not the crafting of an artwork as it is quite technical, which can be trained, but the idea of it. It is difficult to convert a message or illustrate a thing, especially when you need to tell others about ourselves.

Maybe I need more time to understand myself.
